Yosuke Hanamura is a major character in Persona 4 and all its kindred titles. He is Yu Narukami's best friend and the first to have welcomed him to Yasoinaba when he moved there to be with his uncle. Like Yu, Yosuke is originally from the big city.

[edit] Appearance

Yosuke is a fair-skinned male of average height (5'9) with chestnut colored hair. One particular physical trait that sets him apart from other characters is his abnormally long neck, which becomes quite obvious during the Epilogue in Persona 4 Golden and most of Persona 4 Arena. His conventional outfit consists of the Yasogami High men's uniform coupled with a white V-neck. A standard feature of Yosuke's attire is his red headphones, which he carries around with him in both the TV and the real world. He is rarely seen without them, sans a few special events throughout the winter months. Within the TV World he wears orange colored glasses to improve his vision against the fog.

Yosuke's out-of-school attire varies by season like the other members of the Investigation Team. On summer off days he wears a white V-neck T-shirt with red lettering on the front. For any other off days, he's seen wearing an orange V-neck with a white leather jacket and dark colored pants. Throughout the colder months of Golden, he wears a white hooded sweatshirt along with orange goggles that hang around his neck. On seldom occasions, he wears a blue jacket over his Yasogami uniform. During his shifts at Junes, he wears a standard orange V-neck under a white colored apron.

[edit] Personality

Right from the start of Persona 4, Yosuke Hanamura comes off as an awkward high school student that cannot seem to run into fortune. The first glimpse the protagonist sees of Yosuke is him crashing into objects with his bicycle and getting kicked in the groin for returning a cracked "Trial of the Dragon" disk to his fellow classmate Chie Satonaka. He's an impulse thinker and is quite blunt in his remarks, even when they may not be appropriate at that specific time. He also appears to lack common sense, as seen when he brings weapons into Junes despite the recent atrocities throughout Inaba. Despite having several friends, he does not appear to be all that popular, specifically with females. While his infatuations tend to travel across a variety of characters, he showed a deeper attraction to Saki Konishi. After her death, he becomes upset and uses her passing as fuel to solve the murders. Even when he finds out his feelings were not mutual, he is adamant in avenging her death by searching for the truth. Despite his easy-going nature, Yosuke can get serious when the situation calls for it. More often than not, his maturity is veiled by his off-colored comments and insults, but he is quite capable of deducing information and coming up with possible suspects. Yosuke often gets into arguments with the group, most notably with Chie.

As a city boy, Yosuke often feels like he's wasting his life away in the countryside. We eventually learn that, like Yu, he was forced to move to Inaba due to family issues. He is the son of Inaba's Junes supermarket manager, which gives him a sense of responsibility he seems committed to fulfilling. He is seen at work quite frequently and gets defensive when people accuse Junes of destroying Inaba's shopping district. His ties to the store gives him a stigma within town, which could explain his strong resentment to the countryside. Unlike his partner, Yosuke holds a variety of insecurities that become exposed during the first few trips to the TV World. His shadow accuses him of playing the hero and using Saki's death as an excuse for entertainment. His hatred of the countryside is magnified when his shadow refers to Inaba as "the sticks" where nothing exciting ever happens. To combat this boredom, Yosuke surrounds himself with people to supplant this disdain. As the game progresses, he begins to adapt to life in Inaba and starts to enjoy living there. The Investigation Team allowed him to become a part of something; a feeling which he never really experienced before.

In Persona 4 Arena, Yosuke seems to be more mature given the events concerning the Midnight Channel. Contrary to some of the other fighters, he occasionally keeps calm before jumping to any conclusions. Despite this, he's still pretty immature in other aspects, including his words to some of the female fighters and his now destroyed collection of "those magazines with the nurses".
